Item Description
Style: Encased in its original, beautifully preserved gilt over gesso frame, this early 19th century mirror is a delightful piece. The worn gilding reveals a reddish brown bole beneath, the traditional preparation base characteristic of authentic water gilding, while a subtle, charming floral motif accents the perimeter. Within the frame sits the original mercury glass, displaying light, graceful foxing that dates the piece to before 1840. Complete with its original backboards and a secure hanging wire, this historic treasure is ready to grace a new home.
Story: The Louis Philippe gilt mirror originated in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe I (1830–1848), a period characterised by the rise of the bourgeoisie and a blending of neoclassical restraint with comforting domestic luxury.
