Item Description
Style: Pretty and petite rare hand made 19th century Venetian oval wall mirror featuring a scallop cut frame adorned with mirror bubbles and flower motifs, secured by tiny glass screws. Topped and tailed with acanthus style leaves and simple line engraving. Some damage to the top leaf on the main frame, and some light foxing on a small section of the frame and bottom scrolled leaves. Its original bevelled central glass is in very good condition with a clear reflection. A wooden framed back with hanging wire.
Story: Originating on the Venetian island of Murano in the 13th century, mirror making began with artisans perfecting crystal glass and metal backings. While originally reserved for royalty during the Renaissance, the late 19th century sparked a revival of historicist designs, introducing intricately decorative wall and dressing mirrors.
