Item Description
A super quality, !9th century, beechwood breadboard and matching knife. Both board and knife are carved with the motto “Manners Makyth Man”. This is the motto of Winchester school and these boards were carved for use there. William of Wykeham founded the school in 1382 and his personal motto, Manners Makyth Man, was radically progressive for its time. It used English instead of Latin and proposed that we should be measured by our personal qualities and achievements and not by our birthright. The board and knife are also carved with two keys crossed by a sword. Both pieces are well carved and in very good condition, with just an element of wear consistent with use.
Dimensions: Board: Diameter 32.5cm. Depth 2.3cm. Knife: Length 32.8cm. Diameter of handle 3cm.
Price includes postage within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A. add £30. Most of Western Europe add £15.
