Item Description
This porcelain Regency bowl has it all: Pink lustre detail on the rim and foot and a good bat printed image of a country home and deer park. It is planted with Pulsitalla, the pasque flower, Pulsatilla vulgaris, a pretty spring flower, traditionally a sign that Easter has arrived.
The bute-shaped bowl is most likely made in the Rathbone factory of Tunstall, Staffordshire between 1810-1820 although the bowl is unmarked. Newhall and Spode were also making bat-printed porcelain at this time as well although Rathbone were fond of combining it with pink lustre such as this. Bat printing or black printing, was a technique for transferring engraved designs onto china and porcelain that was invented around 1766. From 1820 it was entirely abandoned due to the complex nature of the technique,
The bowl is in excellent condition - no cracks, chips or crazing - just some of the lustre has rubbed off on the rim entirely commnesurate with age. It also has a very sweet transfer pattern on the inside of the bowl.
The Pulsitalla has silky buds which open to light purple, cup-shaped flowers which mature to develop a star shape. As the flowers develop, ferny foliage starts to appear at the base of the stems, which continues to look good after the flowering season has finished.
