Item Description

A superb quality, large, 18th century, Wedgwood black basalt plaque which is known as the “Baccanalian Sacrifice”. The design is after a bas relief by Claude Michel, the French sculptor, who was also known as Clodion. The plaque was first listed in Wedgwood’s 1773 catalogue. This example is unmarked but it is most definitely by Wedgwood and dates from c.1775. It would have been one of the very early examples, when marking was still slightly inconsistent. The subject is wonderfully detailed, with fabulous depth to the moulding, and excellent undercutting to the reliefs. It is in excellent condition. It is in its original gilt frame, which has a few minor scuffs.
Dimensions: Plaque: Length 51.5cm. Width 22.6cm.
Dimensions overall including the frame: Length 56.2cm. Width 27.2cm. Depth 2.5cm.
Price includes postage within the U.K. Shipping to the U.S.A. add £150. Most of Western Europe add £75.
