Item Description
A late 18th century, double sided, fruitwood sugar mould. This is stamped with the name of the carver “F.FENTON” and it dates from c.1790.To one side it is carved with a series of border designs and tiny cherubs holding a garland. The opposite side is carved with a reeded section and a column, which would have been used as part of a building, and other tiny leaves and plumes. The carving is of exceptional quality. The carver has also started to carve some leaves on the side of the block but these have never been finished. There is wear to one edge of the block and also to the border designs but this is still a fascinating mould.
