Item Description
A rare 19th century, steel bread knife with a carved wooden handle. The steel blade is marked “JAMES TIDMARSH” and has “LONDON MADE” in a circle. James Tidmarsh was listed in the London Street Directory of 1843 as being a wholesale cutler at 13 Eyre Street Hill, Hatton Garden. This knife dates from c.1860.
The carving of the handle is very unusual and it reads “IF HE ASK FOR BREAD WILL YE GIVE HIM A STONE”. The piece is in very good condition with just a little pitting to the steel blade.
Dimensions: Length 34.5cm. Width of blade 3.5cm. Diameter of handle 3.2cm.
