Item Description
A pair of charming Indian temple toys dating to approximately the early 20th century. They are both in the form of a horse and rider, and they have wheels that turn on an axle. They are made of bronze using the lost wax technique, so each is unique. They have decorative detail to the saddles, harnesses and wheels, and an attractive aged patina. There are still traces of the original paint to the wheels.
These were traditionally made in Central India for Hindus to leave as devotional donations in temples, but they were often played with by children whilst they waited for their parents to complete their devotions.
This is a matched pair, one being a little smaller than the other - the measurements given are for the larger of the two. They are in good condition. Being made of bronze, they are quite heavy.
