Item Description
A charming bone china cup & saucer, made by Hammersley & Co of Longton, Staffordshire in approximately the late 1930s to early 1940s. These pieces come from a range decorated with images of 'Alice in Wonderland'. The images are copies of the illustrations produced by Sir John Tenniel for the original 1865 edition of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll. The front of the cup shows the Mad Hatter's tea party, with Alice, the March Hare, the Dormouse and the Hatter gathered round the tea table. The back shows Alice reaching up to a toadstool to talk to the hookah-smoking Caterpillar. The saucer features Alice and the White Rabbit. The decoration is transfer printed. Both the cup and saucer have the Hammersley mark to the base.
Both pieces are in good condition with no cracks or chips but there are a few scratches to the surface of the saucer. There are also a few small firing faults to the transfers that occurred during manufacture.
The measurements given are for the cup. The saucer measures 14cm across.
