Item Description

A rare survivor; this vibrant glass panel advertises Brooke Bond Tea.

Brooke Bond & Company was founded by Arthur Brooke in the mid 19th century. The name was chosen because it was Brooke's 'bond' to customers to provide a quality tea. The firm expanded into wholesale tea sales in the 1870s. Brooke Bond's most famous brand is PG Tips, launched in 1930. By 1957, Brooke Bond was probably the largest tea company in the world, with one third share of both the British and Indian tea markets.

This glass sign probably dates to the 1940s. I've only seen a couple of other similar examples and although I've no evidence to support the idea, I'd speculate that this might have been the upper panel to a cabinet...

The image is reverse printed onto the glass and remains in fantastic condition. There are some incredibly light surface scratches though only visible under a raking light and a small 'chip' to the upper left edge - I say 'chip' but it's actually within the glass ... maybe a 'fissure' would be more accurate? It can't be felt on either side, no glass is missing but it is visible. I've tried my best to photograph it though it's difficult to get it to show.

The sign measures 39cm wide x 27cm high.
