Item Description
Style: A charming antique gilded pier mirror, brimming with age, charm, character, and wonderfully aged patina. Neoclassical style with fluted frame, gold ball detail and black painted plaster fresco. The mirrored glass remains in good condition, albeit with one minor circular imperfection (size of a 50 pence piece) due to back paint damage and air ingress - (see image), and is reflected in the price. Fitted with a later plywood backing and hanging wire.
Story: A pier glass, also known as a trumeau mirror, is a tall, narrow mirror typically framed and designed to be hung on a wall. Historically, they were often placed in the space between two windows, known as a pier, or above a fireplace mantel. These mirrors were particularly popular as decorative elements in neo-classical homes during the 18th century.
