Item Description
A magnificent set of 20 early Victorian Irish silver knives (no hallmark) Circa 1840s (10 extra long dinner knives 10 starter/dessert knives) with original steel blades stamped with makers mark for Waterhouse Company who were based at 26 Dame Street, Dublin from 1842-1960). In the Kings Pattern, the silver plated handles are still crisp in design and the knives are in excellent antique condition. Each knife also has a family crest individually engraved to each handle.
This set looks especially smart in an informal kitchen dining setting, providing an eclectic, Country House feel when matched with other silver cutlery.
NB These knives cannot go in a dishwasher, having been crafted long before such inventions. It is also worth noting that it is privilege to be able to use these old knives, but also a responsibility to ensure that the knives are looked after well; as such the knives are best washed and dried immediately after use (no leaving until the next day!). These knives are only for lovers of patina since the original steel blades have a natural, living finish and will continue to evolve with use. Regular use of a Brillo pad on the blade and even a light glaze of olive oil over the blades will help keep them in fresh condition. The knives are an excellent size with the dinner knives in the traditional extra long size which feel splendid in the hand.
Extra long dinner knives an impressive 28.5cm long
Starter/dessert knives 22.6cm long
